Title: Hooks
Where Theyre From: Manchester, England
Once They Began: 2011
Genre: Publish-punk
For Fans Of: Early Factory Records and Vivian Women harmonies
Seems Like: A C86 band kept in an abandoned warehouse.
After playing in a number of bands around Manchester with boys, Belief Holgate made the decision that they works better with females and created Hooks. This guitar rock band experienced several line-up changes before buying their current version of singer/guitarist Holgate, guitarist Lois McDonald, bassist Anna Donigan, and drummer Sophie Galpin. Theyve cultivated a woman gang image, as well as their hard as nails attitude is driven home by Holgates steely delivery.
Their industrial home town is reflected within their gloomy pop music, getting in your thoughts the first 80s publish-punk seem championed by Mancunian label Factory Records. Hooks embrace a large amoun-fi aesthetic, recording the entire band reside in the studio after which using reverb to produce depth within their spiny guitars (as opposed to just mucking everything up). Additionally they showcase their ear for harmony with moderate, haunting backing vocals that just increase the eerie atmosphere.
Hooks recorded their debut album, Women Like Us, in a week and created the record themselves. Women Like Us has gone out now on United kingdom indie Bella Union. Prior to signing using the noted British indie, this guitar rock band began their very own label, Haus of Hooks. There they launched their first single, Very Last MinuteOrTake You, like a cassette, and they're still delivering music by other artists in addition to posting zines regarding how to do the things they're doing yourself.
